College Student Drug Rehab Program
A Comprehensive, Structured Path to Healing—From Anywhere
Drug Rehab for College Students
Summary: A college student drug rehab program addresses the unique academic and social pressures that fuel substance abuse among young adults. ARTS IOP offers flexible, evidence-based care—including evening virtual IOP tracks available in all 50 states—so students can pursue recovery without abandoning their education.
College life brings freedom, new friendships, and academic ambition, but it also brings stress that can quietly spiral into substance misuse. Between exam pressure, social expectations, and the search for identity, many students turn to alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism, often without realizing how quickly casual use can become dependency. For those juggling coursework, part-time jobs, and a developing sense of independence, the idea of pausing everything to enter treatment can feel impossible.
That’s exactly why a college student drug rehab program needs to look different from a standard adult treatment model. At ARTS IOP in Canoga Park, California, treatment is designed around the realities of student life, not in spite of them. Rather than forcing a choice between recovery and academics, ARTS IOP builds pathways that let students do both, offering multiple levels of care and scheduling flexibility that fit around class times, exams, and campus commitments.

Understanding Substance Abuse Among College Students
College campuses have long been associated with higher rates of experimentation with alcohol and drugs, largely due to newfound independence and social environments that normalize use. Alcohol remains the most commonly misused substance on campuses, frequently tied to social events and fraternity or sorority culture.1 Stimulants like Adderall are also widely misused, often by students seeking a study advantage during high-pressure exam periods, while marijuana and vaping products have become increasingly common as legal and social attitudes shift.2
Several factors converge to make this age group especially vulnerable. Peer pressure plays an outsized role, as does the stress of maintaining grades, managing finances, and navigating relationships away from a home support system. Underlying mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression, frequently co-occur with substance use, creating a cycle that’s difficult to break without professional intervention.
Left untreated, addiction during college years can have consequences that extend far beyond a single semester. Academic performance often declines, scholarships and financial aid can be jeopardized, and the habits formed during this period can follow students well into their careers. Early, targeted intervention through a dedicated program can interrupt this trajectory before it causes lasting damage.
Care Levels at our Drug Rehab for College Students: The ARTS Offerings
A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) serves as the most intensive level of outpatient care. It is ideal for college students transitioning out of residential treatment or those who need significant daily support without overnight stays. Clients engage in comprehensive daily therapies, developing essential coping skills while maintaining a connection to their home environment.
An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers a balance between structured therapy and personal freedom. Clients attend sessions several times a week, allowing them to integrate recovery practices into their daily lives, such as work or school.
Standard Outpatient Programs provide ongoing, flexible support for college students who have established a solid foundation in their recovery. This level of care focuses on relapse prevention, long-term goal setting, and maintaining overall wellness.
Understanding Treatment
Why College Students Need Specialized Drug Rehab Programs
Generic rehab programs are typically built with a broader adult population in mind, and they may not account for the specific triggers students face, like returning to a dorm environment, navigating a social scene built around drinking, or managing the anxiety of falling behind academically. A college student drug rehab program is designed to recognize these pressures directly, rather than treating them as background noise.
Equally important is the ability to continue education throughout treatment, or to plan a clear path back to school afterward. Students who feel forced to choose between their recovery and their degree often delay seeking help altogether, which only allows substance use to become more entrenched. Programs that build academic continuity into the treatment plan, like we do with our trained staff, remove that false choice entirely.
Many college students struggling with addiction also face co-occurring mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD. The ARTS features a Primary SUD (Substance Use Disorder) and Dual Diagnosis Track, ensuring that both addiction and mental health challenges are treated simultaneously for a more robust recovery. We also offer a dedicated Primary Mental Health Track.
Recognizing the need for accessible care, The ARTS provides Virtual IOP (VIOP) and telehealth services across all 50 states (client policies must include coverage of telehealth benefits). We offer two separate Evening Virtual IOP Tracks to accommodate different schedules:
- East Coast VIOP: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 3:00 PM to 5:45 PM (PST)
- West Coast VIOP: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 6:00 PM to 8:45 PM (PST)
We also offer telehealth individual therapy sessions for those who may not be able to attend group sessions. Telehealth allows clients to receive treatment from the comfort of their own homes, making it more convenient and accessible.
Financial concerns should never be a barrier to receiving quality care. The ARTS is proudly in-network with major insurance providers, including Tri-Care West for our military members, Magellan, Blue Shield, Com Psych, HMC, and First Health. We also accept most other PPO insurance plans, making premium treatment accessible to more people.
A supportive home environment is vital for early recovery. The ARTS partners with Chrysalis Sober Living in West Hills, California. Chrysalis provides a structured, accountable, and community-driven living space. Choose Chrysalis if building a strong peer support network matters more to you than maintaining an independent living arrangement during early recovery.

ARTS IOP's College Student Drug Rehab Program Approach
ARTS IOP offers a full continuum of care, including Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and standard outpatient services, allowing students to step into the level of support that matches their needs and step down as they progress. This structure is central to how the college student drug rehab program at ARTS IOP is delivered: students aren’t locked into a single rigid format but instead move through care in a way that mirrors their actual recovery timeline.
Recognizing that many students can’t simply pause their coursework, ARTS IOP provides evening virtual IOP tracks tailored to different time zones.
- The East Coast track runs Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:00 to 5:45 p.m. PST,
- The West Coast track runs Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6:00 to 8:45 p.m. PST.
Because these sessions are delivered via telehealth, students can participate from anywhere in the country, whether they’re living at home during a leave of absence or staying near campus. This virtual option is available in all 50 states, provided a student’s insurance policy includes telehealth coverage.
Treatment Modalities and Support
Every college student drug rehab program at ARTS IOP is grounded in evidence-based therapies, delivered through both a Primary Mental Health Track and a Primary SUD/Dual Diagnosis Track. This dual-track structure matters because so many students entering treatment are dealing with co-occurring conditions, not substance use in isolation. 3 Addressing anxiety, depression, or trauma alongside addiction gives students a much stronger foundation for lasting change.
Group therapy plays a particularly valuable role for this age group. Sharing experiences with peers who understand the specific stresses of college life, academic pressure, social dynamics, and the fear of falling behind helps reduce the isolation that often accompanies addiction. It also builds a support network that can extend well beyond the treatment program itself.4
Insurance and Access Information
Cost and logistics are often the biggest barriers standing between a student and treatment. ARTS IOP is in-network with several major insurance providers, including Tri-Care West, Magellan, Blue Shield, ComPsych, HMC, and First Health, and the program can also work with most other PPO plans.
For students who need a structured living environment during recovery, ARTS IOP connects clients with Chrysalis Sober Living in West Hills, California. The residence offers 10 co-ed beds (three for women, seven for men) at $2,500 per month, with transportation included and both male and female house managers on-site to provide supervision and support.
