Partial Hospitalization Program
What Exactly is Partial Hospitalization?
A report published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration showed that approximately 60% of the US population used a substance per month. The most commonly used substance was alcohol, followed by tobacco, marijuana, pain relievers, cocaine, sedatives, hallucinogens, stimulants, methamphetamine, and inhalants, respectively. Of the individuals who use substances, approximately 19 million struggle with a substance abuse disorder.
Addiction is a mental health concern that affects individuals differently and often has a different progression among those who struggle. Some individuals feel as though they knew they would struggle with substances the first time they used a substance, while others may have a history of moderate use that didn’t progress into abuse until a later age.
No matter what your addiction journey has looked like, the bottom line is that if a drug or alcohol addiction is left untreated, you can find yourself in a continuous health decline while facing other life problems, until the physical consequences of their use kill you. Addiction is a serious health concern that should be treated in a timely manner.

How it works
How Partial Hospitalization Works
There are no two individuals who have had identical experiences with their addiction because we all have our own unique backgrounds and characteristics. Because of this, it is understandable that individuals have different needs regarding addiction treatment. There are two levels of addiction treatment; inpatient and outpatient treatment.
For individuals who complete an inpatient rehab program and feel they would benefit from a continued source of support at home, there are a variety of outpatient treatment programs they can engage in. One of which is a Partial Hospitalization Program, also known as a PHP. Additionally, individuals who struggle with severe addiction and are unable to leave home may be a good fit for a PHP.
Partial Hospitalization Programs provide individuals with a full day of structured treatment. This can include addiction treatment and mental health treatment for individuals who are living with other mental health concerns. PHPs provide individuals with a structured routine for their day similar to what they would experience in an inpatient setting, with the benefit of remaining in their home environment.

Know your options
What to Look for in a Partial Day Program
When you begin looking for a PHP program, you will likely want to find a program that is covered by your insurance. Though PHP programs are more affordable when compared to inpatient treatment, being in-network is still an important detail to be aware of.
Since you will be traveling to your chosen facility for more days than not, the location will be important. You will want to make sure that you choose a commute that is realistic for you, given where you live and your access to transportation.
When looking at the treatment program itself, you should be mindful of what it entails. Some details to be aware of would be if they use evidence-based approaches, have a holistic approach to treatment, have a diverse and licensed staff, and if they offer specialized treatment options. Examples of specialized treatment options include various mental health programs as well as groups for specific populations such as men, women, Veterans, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
