Dual Diagnosis Treatment Centers in Los Angeles

Simply treating the symptoms of substance use disorder may give you some temporary relief, but not addressing its root causes can set you up for relapse. You deserve personalized and thorough substance use disorder treatment from competent, caring staff, no matter what your situation looks like. Having a mental health condition on top of a drug or alcohol addiction, however, warrants proven, evidence-based treatments delivered by expert medical personnel.

Not every drug or alcohol rehab facility offers dual diagnosis treatment, but ARTS IOP in the San Fernando Valley does. We treat the entire client and ensure that we leave no stone unturned during their time here. Give us a call today at (866) 915-8820 to speak with somebody about taking your first step toward sobriety and life-long recovery.

What is Dual Diagnosis?

Dual diagnosis is the practice of recognizing and formally diagnosing co-occurring substance use disorders (drug or alcohol addictions) and mental health conditions. It is important to address any conditions that may affect or give rise to substance use disorder, as mental health conditions, in particular, can fuel substance cravings. Nearly one in five U.S. adults is estimated to be living with a substance use disorder, and the rates are higher among those with a diagnosed psychiatric condition (more than 25 percent). Even more striking is the 37 percent of individuals with a substance use disorder who also live with at least one mental health condition. The correlation between substance use disorders and mental health conditions is likely much higher, as a large percentage of mental illnesses go undiagnosed every year.

People with dual diagnoses can get caught up in a vicious cycle if they do not receive effective care. The symptoms of untreated mental health conditions can be challenging to live with, and many people try to self-medicate with alcohol and drugs. Continued substance use can transform into substance use disorder. Continual substance use can alter the brain and body so that it is extremely difficult to function without being on alcohol or drugs. At the same time, substance withdrawal symptoms, which can start mere hours after the last dose, can be uncomfortable and exacerbate symptoms of mental health conditions. Occasionally, substance use disorder can also create mental health conditions that didn’t exist prior to an individual’s substance use.

Personalized mental health services and cutting-edge substance use disorder treatment come together to form integrated dual diagnosis care. Many therapies that yield successful results for mental illnesses, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), can also help with substance use disorder.

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Major depressive disorder
  • ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder)
  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD)

How Does Outpatient Treatment for Dual Diagnosis Work?

The ARTS IOP offers outpatient care for individuals with substance use disorders or dual diagnoses. As opposed to inpatient or residential care, outpatient treatment allows clients the flexibility to return home at each day’s conclusion. Our Los Angeles-area dual diagnosis treatment center offers three levels of outpatient care to suit clients’ unique needs.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Our partial hospitalization program requires a significant amount of time in treatment—nearly equivalent to a full-time job. PHP clients can receive individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, medication-assisted therapy (MAT), and other interventions. The PHP tier represents the next step in the progression of natural treatment from inpatient care.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

The step-down level of care from PHP is our intensive outpatient program, which obligates clients to 15 hours of treatment per week. Individuals receive many of the same therapies available to clients in our PHP tier and start to hone skills that help them manage cravings in the outside world.

Outpatient Care

Clients who are not in active addiction, have a supportive home environment, and can function well at work or school can benefit from routine outpatient care. This level of care focuses a little less on addiction and recovery education and more on becoming the healthy, well-rounded person you were always meant to be. The outside world can present temptations and challenges, which are often topics of focus in regular or routine outpatient treatment.

Telehealth Dual Diagnosis Care

Convenient Virtual Outpatient Care

To make our dual diagnosis care even more accessible, we have begun offering virtual treatment that clients may participate in during the evenings. These clients still get access to the same proven, evidence-based treatments offered in person at our San Fernando Valley treatment center. If you’re looking for a convenient treatment course that doesn’t require daily commutes, we strongly recommend checking out our virtual care program.

All About Sober Living

Are you looking for something in between inpatient and outpatient care? You might want to consider our option for sober living in Southern California. Our sober living home, the Chrysalis house, provides a supportive living environment so clients can stay focused on their dual diagnosis treatment and not have to worry about many of the temptations inherent in the outside world.

While sober living is not the same as true inpatient care, clients still have 24/7 access to addiction counselors to aid them in their recovery journey. Another benefit of sober living is the extra opportunity to connect with other people who are facing similar challenges with their dual diagnosis circumstances. There’s no better bridge between inpatient treatment and the outside world.

Your Insurance Can Pay for Treatment

Insurance Coverage

The cost of dual diagnosis care is an unfortunate barrier for many individuals. Health insurance can help cover some (or sometimes most) of the costs of substance use disorder treatment, though. The exact amount you’ll need to pay out of pocket depends on your insurance provider and the tier (usually platinum, gold, silver, or bronze) of your plan. ARTS IOP staff can verify your insurance coverage before you sign up for our services.

ARTS IOP is an in-network provider for BlueShield of California, Magellan, HMC, and Com Psych. Contact us today to find out if your insurance will help cover many of the costs associated with treatment at our program.
